About this blog

Diabetes comes in a number of different forms, the most common being Type 2. This condition affects well over ten percent of the UK population. It is also estimated that approximately 30% of the people with diabetes are undiagnosed and a further 10% or more of the population are living with prediabetes.

For a good while I was one of the undiagnosed. By NHS criteria I was low risk for developing diabetes and initially didn’t have many of the classic symptoms. As the effects of my diabetes become more obvious, symptoms did develop but I put them down to other reasons. Eventually I got diagnosed following a routine eye test.

I’m puzzled as to whyb I developed diabetes, hence the blog title “why me?”. Scientific curiosity has led me to investigate the condition, its diagnosis, tresatment and associated technologies in some detail.  I’ve even signed up for a long term clinical trial!

Writing the blog has given me the opportunity to tell my story,  a precautionary tale, and share my thoughts on where we are with type 2 diabetes currently and future developments that may be coming.  Retiring from my position as a University lecturer in 2024 has also given me the time and inclination to write my story.

There are plenty of other diabetes blogs out there but, if you happen to come across this, I hope you find it interestng and informative. I am more than happy to be contacted if you have any comments, thoughts, questions or stories you would like to share.
